It is always exciting when one stumbles across a concept that is presented as new and revolutionary, but in the back of your mind you cannot help but think – I have heard this before! My own experience of this nature came up during my recent foray into qualitative research. I have been speaking to [...]
Today we will dedicate some time to advice for “the Baroque Genius”. Although I wouldn’t place myself in this category, I have some experience in planning a program around a large baroque work, and therefore consider myself qualified to point out some of the advantages and pitfalls.
First, as a general comment – anchoring a [...]
A bonus post this week – many people ask me advice about program notes. I have attached my own if anyone is interested in seeing a sample. I cannot guarantee that they will meet the expectations of all examiners, but I can say that I received full marks for this category in my exam, so [...]
I have had the lucky experience of entering two diploma examinations with Trinity College of London. The first couldn’t have gone worse – ATCL in Flute, 41%! The second couldn’t have gone better – LTCL in Piano, 97%! Whatever else this might say about different standards of examiners, and the respective difficulties of different instruments, [...]
There is no doubt that our growing knowledge regarding the biological origin of psychiatric illnesses is a source of endless excitement. Since the time of the Spanish neuroscientist Santiago Cajal, discoveries in neuropathology have helped establish the authenticity of diagnoses ranging from epilepsy to ADHD, and so given science another valuable victory over centuries of [...]

Psychiatrists have generally found it necessary to include the disclaimer that religious beliefs (which, being faith based, are invariably held in the absence of evidence) should be protected from such a label, so long as they remain [...]
Psychiatry is my primary field of interest, and as a final year medical student, will hopefully be the career I begin to pursue within the next year. As my understanding and experience grows, so to will this section, which will hopefully contain useful discussions of some of the field’s most important themes. In addition, personal [...]
Something of a misnomer, this section will deal with the more empirical aspects of the field. Included in this understanding of “biological” will be issues related to functional neuro-imaging, genetics, neuropathology and psychopharmacology.
This section will aim to contain detailed discussion of classical music repertoire, which will hopefully be of interest to both listeners and performers. As this is an area in which I have some experience, I would gladly welcome any question, which I would endeavour to answer to the best of my ability.
I am by no means an accomplished philosopher, nor am I particularly well read in this area. This section will more likely be a generic category of broader issues that emerge from my exploration of themes in psychiatry, but which do not relate to the field specifically.
